THE NEW P E R S P E C T I V E
MODULE 3
The ExtenSion Concept
This module introduces me to the concepts of the mechanics of a structure in architecture. I approached this module by understanding the concept of extensions added to a structure. In studying the extension of a structure, I understood the different joineries that are used in such extensions. This opened the world of joineries to me.

In the first iteration I studied the BDD chawl located in lower Parel. I created an extension with the help of bamboos and straws and plywood. The joinery in this extension included bolting of bamboo to each other. To support the whole extension to the main structure, I created a deck which had supports on the bottom of it. The roof of the extension was made up of plywood and plastic sheets attached with nails/glue. This enabled the person to look at the sky while lying down. The whole structure is also supported by bolting the bamboos in the wall of the main structure. The whole extention is extended from the balcony of the main structure which on the first floor.

In my second iteration, I created a folding and collapsing extension. This extension instead of being on the first floor like the previous extension was directly bolted though a metal plate to the wall of the main structure on the ground floor. The primary joinery of this extension included ball bearings. The materials are timber, plywood, straw and metal. The structure is covered using straw curtains. The whole extension folds into three forms that is the :
1) The Bed
2) The Bench / Table
3) The Pergola
The whole structure folds when not in use and sits flush to the wall of the main structure.

In conclusion, this module taught me a lot about the structural mechanics of architecture. The different joineries and the different process of using a particular material. This module was truly a peek into the world of structural mechanics. This module also developed the thinking methodology behind the mechanics a structure .
