MODULE 4

CortOzar In KOnD

This module started with the study trip to Kond a village in Sri Vardhan. After understanding the different characteristics of the village, like the climate, the construction style, the occupation, etc. I returned in Mumbai. I introduce myself to a surrealist writer known as Cortozar through his book Hopscotch. On reading the book I found one of the paragraphs is very intriguing and interesting to me. This paragraph talked about how the writer describes a particular piece of music. The sound in the music is described with words. By doing so he was able to create a visual perception of sound instead of just hearing it. I combined the different sounds in Kond with words. After many iterations of this, I discovered a new methodology with which I can convert sound from a hearing sense to a visual sense. I was able to achieve this by converting the different intensities of sounds to lines. I then understood the different sounds in a particular house in Kond throughout the day. I started to map all the different types of sounds in the house throughout the day by ploting lines of varied lengths, showing the intensity of sounds in that particular point in the house. In some places, the lines are very long, depicting that the intensity of sound over there is very high, whereas in some places it is very short. In some places, the dense city of lines is very high, thus implying that there are many different types of sounds present in that particular area.

With the help of this understanding, I was able to create a Spatial apparatus that depicts a space of sound experience, through vision and not through hearing it. After many iterations, I concluded on spatial apparatus. In the final Spatial Apparatus, the height of the curves shows the intensity of the sound, and the different clusters of curves show the different types of sounds present in the area.

Later on with the help of this Spatial Apparatus, I created an air BNB extension in the village of Kond. The first iteration I created was extremely basic with a two-floor extension with the bottom floor being a public space and the first floor being a proper air BNB room. But the extension was very loosely attached to the Spastial Apparatus. After many iterations, I finally concluded on an extension that was will be built above all the roofs of the houses in Kond. The whole extension was being held by 30 cm diameter metal pools, which were anchored to the ground in the labyrinths of the houses in Kond. the whole extension is made up of wooden planks, metal plates, iron rods, and GI sheets.

This Module taught me how to study a particular site with its characteristics and how to create our own interventions in the site by the combinations of various pieces of literature in architecture. This module opened in me a new dimension of understanding space through various literature and applying them in the real world.

This module was one of the most adventurous module for me as it had many folds and dimensions to it. Like understanding a particular site, relating literature to a space, creating a Spatial Apparatus, and then into an architectural piece. In conclusion, I would like to say that this Module gave me a new eye and a new perspective through which I look at a particular space.
